COPPA – Is this video Made for Kids? New YouTube Policy for Uploading a Video.
Recently while uploading a video on youtube I have seen this option, so I did a research on it and got to know the following things.
- While uploading the video it is compulsory to declare whether the video is made for kids as YouTube needs to comply with the US Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). This is made compulsory as YouTube could set a different setting for those videos marked as “Made for Kids” in accordance with the COPPA.
- The Act includes rules regarding the collection of personal information like first and last name, home or other physical address including street name and name of a city or town, online contact information, screen or user name that functions as online contact information, telephone number, etc.
- Starting in January, YouTube will limit the data they collect on made for kids content in accordance with the COPPA. As a result of this, YouTube will disable certain features like comments, notifications, and others for those videos which are marked as “Made for Kids”.
- Most importantly, YouTube will not serve personalized ads on kids content. This is because Google uses users activity and information from their Google Account to show personalized ads and this is not in accordance with the Act. This may result in a decrease in revenue for some YouTubers.
- Your video is made for kids if it is made for preschoolers, if your intended audiences are children, if the video includes child actors or models, if the video includes content or activities which appeal to children, if the language of the video is intended for children to understand, etc.
